World Animal Protection’s annual award celebrates the strong, unique and lovable personalities of wild animals at facilities, such as rescue centres or high welfare sanctuaries, that contribute to ending their commercial exploitation.

Before completing your application please review the award terms and conditions for entries and for further information on how to complete your application.

The Prize

There will be a one-off prize of 10,000 USD to the winner, and a prize of 3,000 USD for the runner up, which is to be used to provide care and protection to the wild animals at your facility.

Please note:

Read the eligibility criteria and content submission requirements.
There may only be one wild animal submission per facility.

Key dates

The application deadline is 7th July 2024
If your animal makes the shortlist, we will request additional content about the animal and your facility before public voting opens.
Public voting will run 4th October 2024 - 25th October 2024

The venue operates as a high welfare sanctuary or rescue centre for wild animals

The venue is legally registered in the country of operation and can receive funds through an international bank transfer

In cases where the venue allows visitors/tourists, it meets responsible tourism requirements, such as: no direct contact with the wild animals (no riding, swimming with, or holding for selfie opportunities), and animals don't participate in any type of show, entertainment, or are trained for that purpose

Wild animals under your care are not bred. Exceptions may be made for cases of acknowledged conservation programs with the final objective of releasing the animals into the wild

Wild animals are kept in enclosures appropriate for their species and their individual physiological, and behavioural needs. To ascertain high welfare conditions, venues can be requested to inform about their husbandry practices and animal welfare policies

The venue provides adequate veterinary care in all cases and possesses, or are able to draw upon, knowledge and equipment suitable for the care of the species.  Venues can be requested to provide documentation that demonstrates the veterinary care they implement

Animal caretakers have the required skills in managing the animals under their care safely and humanely

Animals at the venue will not be sold on and will either stay for the entirety of their life until release into the wild or transferred to a more suitable sanctuary/rescue centre facility

The venue is aligned with the vision that wild animals belong in the wild and not for commercial exploitation (e.g. pets, medicine, entertainment, fashion, etc). The venue website and social media should reflect this alignment

The participating animal must have been rescued or rehabilitated from exploitative practices or affected by habitat destruction caused by industrial activities
